(Sun-safety for Outdoor Laborers At-Risk)
SOLAR is a project that was born to educate outdoor workers about their risk of skin cancer due to UVA exposure and preventative practices to lower their risk.
The idea came to David Perez, a long time volunteer in our lab, who drew from his personal experience and interest in dermatology to create a narrative intervention for skin cancer prevention among Hispanic outdoor workers. The goal of the project is to develop a telenovela-style narrative video, representing outdoor workers within the industries of construction, landscaping, and agriculture to educate about personal risk, address common misconceptions, and educate about sun-safety practices in the workplace.
To achieve this, we conducted focus groups with outdoor workers from these industries, collaborated with a community advisory board composed of outdoor workers, clinicians, patient advocates, and national organizations, and partnered with the National Conservatory of Dramatic Arts.
This project is ongoing and was funded by GHUCCTS.
